Introduction

In the Castles of Burgundy, you are princes trying to build a profitable estate through trading, city building, and research. In each phase the players will make the most out of their estate by strategically using their dice rolls to purchase tiles and build their city. The player with the most victory points at the end of 5 phases wins.

Set Up

Board setup

  • Sort the hexagonal tiles by color of the backs
  • Shuffle the square goods tiles and separate into 5 piles of 5, place on spaces A-E
  • Place 12 square bonus tiles onto the bonus spaces

Player setup

Each Player gets

  • 1 player board
  • 1 Dark green castle tile
  • 3 goods tile from the leftover goods
  • 2 dices in player’s color
  • Same colored score track piece
  • 1 Silverling
  • 1 Victory point(100/200) tile for later
  • Worker tiles depending on turn order
  • Place marker on turn order track
  • First player gets white die

 Gameplay

The game consists of 5 phases each with 5 rounds of actions. Before each phase perform the following set up.

Phase setup

  • Remove all remaining hexagonal tiles from board (skip for 1st phase)
  • Draw new hexagonal tiles and place on matching colored depots (skip for 1st phase)
  • Draw black hexagonal tiles and place them on black depot
  • Take the goods tile for current phase and place face up on round spaces

Game round

Each phase consists of 5 rounds. At the beginning of each round, all players roll their dice, the starting player also rolls the white dice. Place the goods tile associated with the current round onto the depot matching the number on the white dice

A player will carry out 2 actions per round. Dice can be modified up and down by spending workers.
The actions include:

In addition to the 2 dice actions, players may once per turn buy from the central black depot for 2 silverlings at any point during the turn. The newly purchased tile must be placed in storage.

At the end of the phase. All players with mines will receive corresponding number of silverlings. Some knowledge tiles take effect. Move on to next phase.

Take hexagonal tile

Take a hexagonal tile in a depot corresponding to your dice roll and place in storage. If storage is full, you must discard a previous tile, even if the second action is to place the new tile.

Add a tile from storage to your estate

Take a tile from storage and place it in a space matching the dice roll on your estate. The new tile must be adjacent to a previous tile, and match the color of the space.

Each tile has an effect that takes place after placement:

When a region is complete, victory points are scored

  1. Depending on size, score between 1 and 36 points (table on game board)
  2. Depending on phase, score between 10 and 2 points (value below phase spaces)

The first player to cover all of one type of region in estate takes the first bonus tile of that color, second player to finish takes 2nd bonus tile. Points on bonus tile vary for number of players.

Sell goods

Die result indicates the type of good that can be sold. All goods of that type must be sold. For each sell, earn 1 silverling and points depending on player number

Game End

The game ends after the 5th round of the 5th phase. Final scoring as follows

  • Each unsold good – 1 point
  • Each silverling – 1 point
  • Every 2 workers – 1 point
  • Score for VP yellow tiles
